The compact, durable gearbox

Compact, powerful and particularly easy to assemble: KEB's shaft-mounted gearmotors have many practical advantages for machine and plant manufacturers. KEB parallel shaft gearmotors are made in Germany and 100 percent manufactured in the motor and gear unit plant in Schneeberg. The result is high-quality products with a high efficiency of 94 to 96 percent, which are available in numerous versions.

At a glance: What are the advantages of a shaft-mounted gear unit?

  • Space-saving: slim and compact design
  • Powerful: Even with reduced backlash designs, they offer high performance
  • Versatile: Shaft-mounted gearmotors are suitable for a wide range of applications
  • Easy to assemble: The gears can be easily mounted on the input shaft of the application
  • Long service life: Due to wear-free helical gearing and large-dimensioned roller bearings

What is a shaft-mounted gearbox and how is it constructed?

The shaft mounted gear is the ideal choice for applications with limited space due to its slim design. The space saving is achieved by the fact that the gears are arranged in a flat, parallel plane. The gears are either equipped with straight or helical gearing, depending on the requirements. At KEB, the gears are generally helical. The output axis is parallel to the motor axis, but with offset from it. This enables hollow and solid shaft gearbox designs and ensures efficient power transmission.

A special feature of the shaft-mounted gearbox is that it can be placed on the customer shaft, which is particularly interesting for series production because there is no need to mill a base plate. Customers benefit from an easy installation. The housing of the shaft-mounted gearbox not only protects the gears, but also allows for stable mounting of the axles. The axles of the gears are supported by bearings, which also ensure low-friction rotation. This results in a longer service life for the shaft-mounted gearbox. Power is transmitted directly from one gear to the other. This results in a particularly high level of efficiency combined with a simple design.

What is the difference between a shaft-mounted gear and a helical gear?

In addition to shaft-mounted helical gearboxes, KEB's portfolio also includes helical gearboxes, among other things. There are a number of aspects regarding design and function that need to be considered when choosing between the two. One of the biggest differences between the two types of gearbox is that the center distances of the shafts are significantly further apart in the shaft-mounted gear unit than in the helical-gear unit. Compared to the shaft-mounted gearbox, helical gearboxes are usually designed to be “simpler” and tend to be cheaper to buy. The noise levels of the two types of gearbox do not differ significantly.

While shaft-mounted helical gear units are often used in machines that require simple and direct power transmission, helical gears are frequently found in conveyor systems, industrial machinery and many other mechanical systems. Shaft-mounted gears are particularly useful when it comes to compact and simple applications, while helical gears are chosen for their high load capacity and versatility, among other things. Ultimately, the specific requirements of the respective application (available space, layout of the application, etc.) determine the choice of gear.

What types of shaft-mounted gears does KEB offer?

KEB offers parallel shaft gearboxes for a torque range between 240 Nm and 8,900 Nm. In combination with the appropriate drive, parallel shaft geared motors with power ratings of up to 45 kW are created. KEB parallel shaft gearboxes can be mounted on the motor side, enabling the realization of very space-saving drives, for example as a winch drive.

KEB parallel shaft gearmotors can be equipped with motor adapters of different standards or with a free input shaft instead of the motor. Adapters are available for IEC motors, NEMA motors and servo motors. Among other things, the gearmotors are available in various shaft-mounted versions. However, flange versions can also be realized at the customer's request. In addition, the “shaft-mounted version plus side surfaces” and the “flange-mounted version plus side surfaces” variants are available. All technical details about the different versions of KEB shaft-mounted gear units can be found on the corresponding product page.

Where are shaft-mounted helical gear units used?

Shaft-mounted gears can be found in a variety of applications, especially where a compact design and efficient power transmission are required. These include mechanical devices, machine tools and, in particular, materials handling technology. Shaft-mounted gearmotors are often used in conveyor belts and conveyor systems, as the space-saving dimensions of the shaft-mounted helical gear are advantageous here, for example when a motor is to be positioned under the conveyor belt. The example of a conveyor belt shows how easy it is to assemble KEB shaft-mounted gearboxes: the conveyor rollers of a belt conveyor have a journal onto which the shaft-mounted gearbox can simply be plugged, bolted and used in no time. Installation costs are comparatively low because no flange is required. Likewise, the need for a base surface with four holes, which usually has to be particularly flat and straight, is eliminated – the drive only has to be attached at one point, the torque arm. In addition to conveyor belts, shaft-mounted helical gears are increasingly being used in logistics, production lines and warehousing.
